Wish Upon a Star-Breaking with Tradition.
John Townsend in his book Hiding from love, has helped influence some of
my thinking on the subject of Human Tragedy and Healing. Him and the
character of the Terminator (the guy who is built with some amazing
alloy with self restoring capacity).
So my theory goes like this. When we are hurt, certain parts of us stop
growing and will remain stunted until a time when the right balm has
been found to cleanse our wounds.
This takes place on a personal level but also on a national level.
What this means is that if there is a chapter in your life or a tragic
event for which you are presented with no answers, that part of your
life will remain broken. Think about all the major events in your
nation's history (especially those for which you have no answers) and
you will find scars and wounds.
We do not know what would have been different had John Fitzgerald
Kennedy rule continued. We do not know what the significance of his
speech in Berlin was. What we know and what we deal with is the residue
of emotion that flooded the nation at the point of his exit.
This was not the first time America was confronted with the effects of
her birth pangs, Abraham Lincoln had not lived out his full life when he
too succumbed but both have at least built for themselves memorials to
celebrate their achievements.
You can count (on one hand) the number of U.S presidents who had no
military service or significant rank to back their position. Maybe this
is a key indicator in the nature of those stars and stripes. While there
are some presidencies that America simply stumbled upon (after the
untimely death), there are others which represented a significant break
from tradition and the introduction of a new state of play.
I think that Ronald Reagan's presidency represents such a move.
Hollywood response to a nation in need of something.
And soon this former star began to flex a new kind of muscle. He went on
to create alliances with England (Margaret Thatcher) and Russia (Mikhail
Gorbachev) as well as create some major policy shifts in his own back
yard.
Reference to the 'Star Wars' project were significant given his history
and i think we will see a revival of this defense related push. This
idea was essentially about the creation of a shield and a major thrust
towards space as a new frontier for warfare. Think of what you can
achieve militarily of you had eyes in the sky that could eliminate enemy
offensives from above as well as serve as bases for future mission
stations.
It is amazing if you look back to some of the effects of his
presidency-direct and indirect. The Berlin Wall, The Soviet Union and
its Future, The Cold War turned Warm and off course Israeli Palestinian
Relations.
