This Week's Hero
This week a local government leader received his results for the Primary
Level Curriculum. There was a lot of excitement from some circles and
the usual dose of laughter from the vultures as they gathered in search
from some carrion.
This story is linked to another in which a group of counselors emerged
from their constituents as victors but stumbled through their respective
ceremonies as they attempted to navigate their way through the English
language.
The latter group represents an activity that is going to continue to
permeate our electorate as many citizens begin to lean towards their
own, in acts of defiance against an educated but non-performing group.
It is understandable why the local government leader made the choice to
return to school, but my guess is that the ripple effects of his actions
will be felt where it matters-among the young.
It should be noted that one of the reasons he has given for his return
to school was the difficulty he faces leading men and women that are
more learned than him. In the current flow of things, Integrity might
begin to make a come back having taken a beating from Popularity.
With a sizable resource envelope it is not uncommon to see unschooled
men assign to themselves more learned men both for the purposes of
language and the management and administration of their daily affairs.
Maybe we have attempted to push the idea behind inclusion a little too
far. The law of supply and demand tells me that the things which we
value are also the things that are most rare.
No one is lining up to see you and me but, they sure do want to take
pictures of the Masai and the Samburu warriors. The point is that they
have become attractive precisely because they have chosen to be
different.
I am hoping that we will make the changes necessary to educate our
societies while making it a little harder for those who choose to live
at the fringes to set up shop and to build permanent residences on the
side lines.
That heroes will not be subjected to laughter but applause instead.
