The Intersection Between Technology and Religion.
On Saturday the 15th of February 2014, i attended a meeting created
under the banner of a group called Indigitous. It is a blend between two
words. Indigenous and Digital.
I was interested because, for the first time, at least in these parts,
there was an attempts to link technology and religion. If the reports in
the news are anything to go by, then we in Africa are on a Cross Roads
having to decide if what we believe is worth killing for. The Central
African Republic to a grater extent , Sudan to a lesser extent are some
examples of countries that have born the brunt of religious wars with
ethnic connotations. Maybe we have come full circle and the slave trader
finally has to face the slave what is clear though is that a
confrontation of some kind is finally taking place.
It is said that the method isn't sacred but the message is. With this in
mind i am curious as to what form the message is going to take. We are
awash with methods and if the cash can be raised, new methods will
continue to emerge. The question is, how can you create a message and
which message will you use to cause significant change in those to whom
it is directed?
These were my thoughts when i attended as well as the idea that we never
really know who is on the other side of our communication. And while the
numbers are impressive, we are still dealing with a technology that was
designed primarily for the military and ultimately for surveillance.
If you know anything about technology you will realize that the computer
just like the phone has a unique address and identifier that allows it
to be tracked to its physical location. It also has a virtual address
that changes based on what gateway it is dynamically assigned.
Your smart phone (a glorified modem) and your modem also has the same
capabilities.
What this means is that monitoring is also a little easier.
So here are some suggestions based on a measure of experience.
1. Salvation.
2. Discipleship-Based on scripture memorization-Three phases.
3. Practical living (Restoration of Structure).
4. Leadership Practice.
5. Support for those will lifestyle challenges (Drugs, Alcohol)
6. The use and promotion of the creative Arts.
7. The use of wilderness experiences (monastic living). Concrete
wildernesses and hideaways.
A combination between the preaching of the Dominicans and the practices
of the Franciscans.
