These types of events have become a regular feature in the city Uniting both traders and cultural enthusiasts in show that cover everything from health to nutrition and even fashion. Omwenge Omuganda (Local Cultural Brew)
It was not possible to visit every stand but there were a few that need to be mentioned. The first was a stand for traditional brew. The grain based brew is created using a special variety of banana. The mixture of sugar in the banana and the grain and a bit of time allow for a potent mix that given some time will ferment to create a bubbling village drink that goes back a long time. There is a complex combination of plantain stems and other sticks are are used to direct the flow of the liquid which is then funneled into a old used boat that is supposed to historically be carved out of one of our popular sturdy hardwood tree varieties. The concoction is covered and allowed a little time to mature. The bananas that are used to create the alcoholic drink are usually allowed to 'cook' under smoke rich fire that as one might imagine quickens the fermentation process?
Ebika ne Weema (Totems and Tents)
These are a common feature and the plan is to create a 'clan way' along Kabaka Njagala Road. With stones of the same to represent the almost 52 clans that make up Buganda. These are now centers of education and the revival of culture so that young people with little or no knowledge about their past can find out a little more from designated tents.
Omusubuzi ne Omwoleso (The small business person and Trade Show)
Here are some useful take ways for those those with some small business ideas. Some of the participants that i talked to have home businesses. What the do is make time for trade shows and exhibitions at least twice or thrice a year where they can sell their wares. This is less costly than full fledged office or business space that many find themselves having to contend for. Work related to design and creativity is handled in the home and then special days are reserved for markets in specific parts of the city or for large scale.
Ebyokulya ne dagala (Nutrition and Diet)
The is a lot of work going into solutions for health and nutrition and supplements. The only thing that distinguishes one product from the next is the logo on the plastic jar and some variations in the ingredients but the promises are all the same. The biggest difference between our local groups and the international groups is the research and the multi-level marketing that makes up the foreign providers. There is a lot of work going into the creation of a center for herbal remedies to help identify and classify what exists and to help find some proof to its effectiveness beyond the tales of old wives.
Gavumenti Eya wakati ne Obwakabaka (Central Governance and Kingdom Business)
There are some very useful partnerships that are being created between the central government and the Buganda Kingdom to help produce better results in all sort of areas like agriculture, health and education to name but a few. Areas of contention such as in the governance of City and its boundaries are still sticking points but these are complex issues that will be sorted in a matter of time. In the meantime there is a very well structured system (of directorates) at the City which if utilized well can deliver the results we desperately need. This and the separation of responsibilities and a clear line of command for proper accountability can make a difference.
Ebyokulabilako (Models and modeling)
NO event of this magnitude would be complete without the occasional older lady dishing out juicy advise to struggling couples and others seeking all manner of potions to rekindle or keep love. There is also an attractive and well designed model of coronation central. The prestigious spot that has served as a sacred hub for rites and rituals regarding succession. the guardians of this and other sites have made some replicas of the same that are an amazing look into a very secretive and useful part of ganda life.
