Airbnb and me?
When there is a slow down in Tourism our hotels suffer. A few years ago we were arguably the go do destination for conferences and regional gatherings and I think a good number of locals made a killing from trips and events that took place back then. The common wealth heads of governments meetings for example spawned a construction boom for hotels, lodges, the purchase of vehicles for transportation services, as well as the creation of high technology media centers.
But there are some hotels that are built with these ideas in mind that have suffered. The smaller ones though, can still survive if they continue to focus on the loyal few as well as build on the local populace.

Another possible entrant into this market would also be bed and breakfasts. These are opportunities for many who have large homes and some space that can be converted to cater for a select group of international users. Combine this with taxi services, shopping, catering and food delivery services that function with locators and smart phones and you might have a recipe for success.
In the U.S there are issues around ownership. How do you manage a home and work out the costs or agreements with those who wish to live their temporarily? Can you create sub-sections in your home so that the costs generated by bed and breakfast users can go towards your payments for the rental property or is that even possible. What are the rules that govern homes that have mortgages? What about questions concerning liability and disputes Should any arise.
What normally happens here is that you have brokers (who make a cut off of fining you someone to occupy a house that is available in the neighborhood). Lately though, there has been a marked rise in real estate development that had brought about new companies that can be hired to take care of construction on behalf of relatives that are abroad or even to handle rent collection and land acquisition in a professional manner.
How there existing groups deal with the possible rise of a new player than needs decent to very well made spaces for brief periods of time will prove interesting in the months and years to come.
