Truth and Technology
This Week an American, Tom MacMaster admitted to being the writer behind a blog titled a 'gay girl in Damascus'. His writings had touched a raw nerve especially in a conservative and predominantly muslim culture. Tom had amassed quite a following, judging from the uproar that that arose upon his admission.
Even though some of the criticism towards him is justified, i think this has highlighted some important everyday issues.
How many times have you pretended to be something that you are not and gotten a way with it? A relationship in which you are involved may not have happened if you had not restricted the information you made available to your other half.
What is it that you said in the interview to get you your current job?
Was it correct to respond to your teenage child the way you did when he or she asked you about your life in College?
Firstly, we give out limited amounts of truth (lie) all the time to get what we want. Our response to Tom reflects a fraction of what happens when we are finally exposed.
Secondly, the internet and the host of its related technologies are forcing us to recalibrate our relational parameters.
Thirdly, we are deceiving ourselves into thinking that we are connected or in touch or relating.
Fourthly, having these devices with us has not helped us change much of our thinking infact i argue that it has helped galvanize our vices.
Fifthly, it should trouble us how much value we place in the writings of others.
